Every Friday afternoon, 162 students at Portsmouth Elementary School go home with a bag of nutritious food and snacks to ensure they have enough to eat over the weekend. And it’s all because of Steven Hunter, a Portsmouth High School graduate and beloved son who passed away unexpectedly at age 21.
At Healing Heart Food Pantry in Lincoln County, WV, community members in need receive so much more than just food. They’re met with compassion, love, and care for their health and well-being. Volunteers greet visitors with open arms, often by name, and work thoughtfully to meet their most pressing needs. “Our goal is to make them feel like family because they bless us,”
Big Sandy Health Care, a Federally Qualified Health Center in Prestonsburg, KY, provides comprehensive primary care and specialty services for residents of five counties in eastern Kentucky. It operates 12 fixed clinic sites, seven school-based health centers, and mobile medical and dental units.
Marshall University’s Department of Social Work has teamed up with elementary schools in Cabell and Wayne counties to provide a valuable in-school behavioral health intervention for children. The Trauma-Informed Mindfulness Engagement for Kids (TIME4K) program uses activities and movement exercises to help students cope with nervous energy or other uncomfortable feelings.
